Frederick Hart Sculptures in Bronze, Acrylic and Stone

Frederick Hart was born on June 7, 1943 in Atlanta, Georgia. At 55 years old, Hart died in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a renowned American sculptor who, up to this day, is acknowledged through his patented works. Hart is the son of an unsuccessful actress and a US Navy member, both Presbyterians. His mother died in the year 1945 due to scarlet fever. His father, on the other hand, remarried two years after and later on moved to Virginia in the year 1956. Hart. had stepsiblings whom he lived with for a number of years.Frederick Hart, as a child, showed no interest in academics. He had a couple of years repeating school years, but was able to go to the University of South Carolina in 1959. When he was a student there, he joined protests, was arrested, and kicked out. A few years after, Hart’s sister died of leukemia. It was that time when Hart was able to attend a sculpture class and was immediately mesmerized by the concept. His mourning, which he spent learning from his sculpture class, was later on transformed into a great work of art called “Family.”

The Beginning and Height of His Career

Hart was an assistant sculptor to Felix de Weldon in 1966. Later on, he became a mail clerk and shortly after that received apprenticeship in stone carving. He became a stone carver after five years. The first Frederick Hart sculpture was entitled “Family,” a tribute to his sister who died earlier.

His first winning piece was entitled “Ex Nihilo.” Another popular Frederick Hart sculpture in Bronze was the “Three Servicemen,” also known as Frederick Hart Three Soldiers. This particular piece was installed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1984. According to Hart, bronze tends to be moving and violent and emotional.

During the later part of his career in sculpting, Hart began creating pieces using cast acrylic resin. Frederick Hart acrylic sculptures are now considered among the most famous out of his creations. The first Frederick Hart acrylic work was called the Child in 1975.There are many other masterpieces that Frederick Hart was able to create through the years.

Gaining Honors in the Field

Because of his artworks and dedication to the craft, Frederick Hart was given the National Medal of Arts in 2004, signed by President George Bush. In the year 1987, Hart was able to gain an honorary degree at the University of South Carolina. He was awarded the Henry Hering Award of the National Sculpture Society, and in 1988 was given the Presidential Design Excellence Award. From 1985 to 1989, Frederick Hart served as a member of the US Commission of Fine Arts.

Frederick Hart pricing ranges from a few hundred dollars to a hundred thousand and more. The Celebration, a bronze sculpture, is sold at around $500,000 online. The Daughters of Odessa, also a bronze sculpture , which Hart created as tribute to Czas Nicolas’ four daughters who died serving the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, is sold at $129,000 online. Acrylic sculptures are priced at much lower rates, depending on the size and details of the piece.
